Safety and Security At NJIT, the safety of students, faculty, staff, and guests is taken very seriously. There have been many measures implemented to ensure safety on campus. The Public Safety Department with its more than 60 member force, including public safety officers, radio dispatchers, and trained police officers, plays an important role in keeping NJIT a safe place to live, study, work, and visit. The campus is patrolled 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by members of the department located at the NJIT parking facility. Public Safety Officers patrol the parking lots and campus building on foot and are not armed. They also assist police officers in providing security for on campus events. A radio dispatcher is assigned to each shift to provide the resources necessary for calls received by the department. NJIT police officers are certified by the New Jersey Police Training Commission after completing training with other municipal recruits. NJIT police officers are armed and have full power to arrest throughout New Jersey. The university police force is responsible for the safety and well being of the university community and guests. An agreement with Rutgers University increases security on both campuses through shared resources including joint shuttle bus service, expanded vehicle patrols, and back-up personnel for assistance during emergencies or special events. The Department of Public Safety can be contacted during an emergency by either dialing (973) 596-3111 or ext. 3111 or using one of the many emergency telephones that are connected directly to the dispatcher. These red emergency telephones are located throughout the campus, in parking lots, and along fraternity row on Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard. The Department of Public Safety offers escorts across campus and to parking lots after normal business hours. Officers also patrol the Lock Street subway station platforms that are located by campus. Prevention is also important to the NJIT community. Seminars, guest speakers, and literature are available to cover topics including alcohol and drug abuse and sexual assault prevention to educate the NJIT community about crime prevention. The Public Safety Department also maintains contact with nearby campuses including Rutgers University, Essex County College, University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ and the Newark Police Departments to stay informed about potential dangers in the city.
